PLEASE STAY ALIVE!

Unfortunately there has been a few suicides here on Barrow Island, a shocking reminder to of us all of the negative impact that living the FIFO lifestyle can have on us!

I encourage everyone to stay vigilant to any behavioural changes with their work mates, and stay on top of their own thoughts and emotions. Please address any issues with caution, as this can obviously be a very sensitive issue.

“…..Your family would much rather see you be happy and be at home than owning that new boat or driveway for the house, but not having you around to share it!”

If you are worried about your own thoughts or feelings, or those of a friend, please don’t handle this yourself- seek professional and ANONYMOUS mental health services such as:

·      EAP (Employee Assistance Programs). Your company will usually have their own preferred organisation. Details should be readily available from HR, supervisors, camp Administration etc.

·      Beyond blue- www.beyondblue.org.au/, 1300 22 4636

·      Life line- 13 11 14

·      Mindspot- http://www.mindspot.org.au, 1800 61 44 34

Please remember the FIFO environment is not a walk in the park and can subject us too feelings of isolation, depression or just feeling alone or a little down. It should NOT be this way- EVER!

Please remember that this work environment is not for everyone- and that’s OKAY!! It does not make you weak or a pussy if you decide this lifestyle is not for you! Your family would much rather see you be happy and be at home than owning that new boat or driveway for the house, but not having you around to share it!!!

The whole point of going to work is to make money- to improve your quality of life. NOT make it worse! At no point in time is it meant to make your life MORE stressful or make you feel down. Please reread the previous post I put up on mindset, and if you cannot think of a good enough reason to be here in this industry, one that fills you with passion and determination- don’t hesitate to think of a healthier way to live out your life. You only get one- don’t spend it doing something you don’t want to do :)

Yours in health and wellness,

Steve
