My name is Steve Hord and I have been working in the FIFO industry for a few years now as an EEHA electrician. I am also a qualified Lifestyle, Food and Wellness coach and author of 'FIFO: There's a healthier way'. I have a strong passion for optimal performance, health and wellbeing whilst at work, rest, training and play!

I honestly believe that it is our duty to appreciate and enjoy each and every moment in this human experience- even if that means working FIFO! The illusion for most of us is that we will start living after wishing away that brutal 20 odd day swing or upon completing our '5 year plan'. When in reality we get home, spend the first 3 days trying to adjust back to 'normal' life and the rest of the days drinking too much to remove the anxiety of having to return back to another swing!
So...out of the 35 days or so roster, how many of those have we actually lived? the answer is often NONE!
As a young electrician, full of enthusiasm at the prospect of starting a mining career it didn't take me long to notice that this lifestyle wasn't in the brochure. What became apparent to me was how much the stresses of daily life are amplified in the FIFO environment. Long days seemed hotter and longer. Shit camp food tasted shiter. That annoying bloke you could tolerate working with in the city was about to cop one square in the face!
At first I decided to blend in and participate in conversations varying from how pathetic the supervision was, how many properties i planned on purchasing from the current job and how many beers i was going to sink as soon as i finished my shift. But being the optimistic individual I had taught myself to become after a bout with depression a few years earlier, i knew there had to be 'A healthier way!' I just started to apply all the principals I knew about health and wellness, nutrition, mindset and goal setting to my new FIFO lifestyle.
“Screw it, I'm just gunna write a book!”
After a few months of the boys constantly asking me 'Why are you always smiling?' Or 'How do you get so lean and whats in that bag of food you brought with you?' I decided to write a page or two for anyone that asked. A couple of headings and then chapters later, i thought 'Screw it, I just gunna write a book!'
Enter: 'FIFO:There's a healthier way!' I never dreamt of writing a book, but the need became apparent. I believed there's three things you can do in a situation. One is to turn your back on it and pretend it doesn't exist. The second is to recognise the problem but just sit back and whinge about it. The third is to recognise the problem and have it shit you enough to change it! Kind of selfish really, I just didn't want everyone around me being negative Nellys or unhealthy- meaning I would be doing their share of the work too haha!
My mission now is to empower the people of the mining industry with all the tips, tricks, nutritional and fitness knowledge I use to breeze through this colourfully labeled 'hellish environment'. I want to give my FIFO family their quality of life back. I aim to renew your health and vitality along the way! Don't waste another day living in this rut, with this unfortunate negative dogma that has surrounded the FIFO community for too long! It's time for a change.
FIFO WELLNESS is that much needed change!
